Basic Start-up Requirements- San Diego County
When starting your new business in San Diego, you will be contacting City, County, State, and Federal agencies for information and assistance with government regulations that pertain to your specific type of business.

There may be specific requirements that go with your particular type of business. Your local police and fire departments often regulate these requirements. For example, the police department regulates businesses dealing with the sale of second hand goods such as pawnshops. In addition, any business involving alcohol distribution, explosives, or adult entertainment is highly regulated by the police department.

The fire department will often have their own set of requirements that sits independently of the police department. Specific fire codes are applied to businesses involving auto repair, hazardous materials, and parts cleaning to name a few. However, all buildings will have certain fire codes depending on the size of the structure and the nature of the business.

Each of the 18 cities located in San Diego county may have their own specific requirements. Be sure to contact the agencies relevant to your particular city. The contact numbers for each of San Diego's incorporated city areas have been included in later sections.

If your business is located in an unincorporated area, local requirements are regulated through County agencies and will also be discussed in later sections.
