New Section of Bayshore Bikeway Under Construction

Unified Port of San DiegoBy the end of this year, biking enthusiasts of all ages will be able to enjoy a new section of a San Diego bay front bike path.

Construction is underway on the new 1.8 mile section of the Bayshore Bikeway. Currently, 12.5 miles of the bikeway are paved, with the rest of the route consisting of on-street sections. Eventually, the bikeway will provide a continuous 24-mile loop around San Diego Bay.

Groundbreaking on the new stretch – from H Street to Palomar Street in the city of Chula Vista – took place on Friday, August 5.

“This project has been a significant effort of all five cities around San Diego Bay, including the Port of San Diego,” said San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox. “We're making major headway in completing what I think is going to be the crown jewel of the San Diego region.”

In addition to recreation, the hope is the Bayshore Bikeway will also serve as an alternative form of commuting.

“Think of its use for transportation,” said Scott Peters, Chairman of the Board of Port Commissioners. “This is a really inexpensive way to build infrastructure to get around in San Diego. There's really no excuse for not having great bicycling infrastructure.”

The route for the Bayshore Bikeway begins near the Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier in San Diego, travels through the South Bay, and ends at the Coronado Ferry Landing in Coronado.

The project is made possible through a partnership with San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), the Port of San Diego, the city of Chula Vista, the County of San Diego, San Diego Gas & Electric, the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) and Community Health Group.

In 2012, SANDAG will begin construction on the next section of the bikeway, which will extend north from Marina Way in National City to 32nd Street in San Diego.

Funds for the project are made possible by federal transportation enhancement funds and the regional TransNet half-cent sales tax, administered by SANDAG.

The Bayshore Bikeway runs through all of the Port of San Diego’s five member cities: San Diego, National City, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach and Coronado.

This project supports one of the key missions of the Port of San Diego, which is to encourage recreation on the tidelands.

The Port of San Diego was created by the state Legislature to manage San Diego Bay and surrounding waterfront land in December 1962. The Port has been responsible for $1.5 billion in public improvements in its five member cities.

The Port oversees two maritime cargo terminals, a cruise ship terminal, 17 public parks, various wildlife reserves and environmental initiatives, a Harbor Police department and the leases of more than 600 tenant and sub-tenant businesses around San Diego Bay.
