Feeding America San Diego
Since joining the San Diego community in 2007, Feeding America San Diego (FASD) has expanded its presence to distribute 15 million pounds of food annually – making it the community’s largest distributor of donated food. What started out as a volunteer effort with two employees and no forklift continues to expand, as FASD’s dedicated network of volunteers and partner agencies remain committed to fighting hunger locally.
FASD distributes food to more than 180 nonprofit partner agencies – from soup kitchens to shelters to schools - ensuring that any donations we receive stay right here in San Diego to help families in need.
Did you know three in 10 San Diego families struggle to put food on the table? In fact, in 2010 alone, FASD serviced more than 437,500 different people and 73,200 in any given week. And nearly half of those in need were under the age of 18. That is why we continue to spearhead programs like Farm2Kids, the BackPack Program, the School Pantry Program, and the Summer Food Service that helps get food assistance into the hands of San Diego’s youth.
We are also motivated to enhance nutrition awareness with fundraising efforts like the 2011 Pound For Pound Challenge. This program allows individuals to give back by pledging their weight-loss goals at www.pfpchallenge.com. For every pound pledged, the Pound For Pound Challenge will donate 11 cents to Feeding America (enough to secure one pound of groceries on behalf of local food banks). Feeding America San Diego is proud to say that all funds and food donated to FASD stays in San Diego for these programs.
To achieve and expand upon our hunger relief goals in 2011, our team has some exciting things in the works – from a brand new 44,000 square foot facility to a brand new cold storage unit.
The 41,580 cubic foot cooler will allow FASD to distribute three million additional pounds of produce and perishable items. Plus, FASD will no longer have to turn down donations of eggs, milk and frozen protein and will be able to expand food purchases to include frozen meats and vegetables.
FASD is celebrating these recent achievements with a grand opening celebration on March 25. Guests are invited to visit FASD’s warehouse for tours, educational seminars and a volunteer fair. Sincerely,
Jennifer Gilmore
