San Diego Crew Classic
On April 2nd and 3rd, 2011, collegiate, high school, Masters and even Olympic-level athletes will return to Crown Point Shores for the 38th San Diego Crew Classic. More than 4000 rowers, men and women ranging in age from 14 to 86, will test their skills on the protected waters of Mission Bay Park. With the city skyline as the backdrop across seven lanes on the 2000 meter course, crews race for early season honors and coveted trophies. Cheered by thousands of spectators enjoying amenities such as the JumboTron for viewing the races from start to finish, the Crew Classic is the largest regatta on the west coast. This iconic San Diego event is a festival celebrating a lifelong, classic sport with great food, a beer garden, trade show, car exhibit, Kids Zone, art show, alumni tents and university bands. On Friday, a “Regatta Preview” will begin at 2 p.m., and the San Diego Radio Group will be broadcasting from Crown Point Shores from Friday through Sunday. Races on Saturday and Sunday run from dawn until dusk, and at noon on Sunday the U.S. Men’s National Team, now permanently headquartered at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, will present an exhibition race.
Known as America’s premier spring regatta, the Crew Classic began in 1973. The Copley Cup was established in 1975 and quickly became the coveted grand prize for men’s collegiate crews. Winners of the Copley Cup include Washington, Harvard, Cal, Penn, UCLA and Stanford. The Jessop-Whittier Cup is the highest prize for collegiate women, and winners include Virginia, USC, Michigan, Cal, and Washington. The more than 100 races over the two day regatta are picked up in 80 countries around the world via a live streaming webcast on ESPNU.
Athletes, families and alumni are encouraged to come early and stay late! Gates open at 6:00 a.m. and the first race is at 7:30 a.m. both days. Concessions are available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $10 per day, under 13 and Active Military free. Parking at Crown Point Shores is $10 per car, but parking with free Goldfield Stage shuttles is available nearby at Ski Beach off of Garnet Street.
