San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce Calls for Support of USS SAN DIEGO LPD-22
There has been Navy presence in San Diego since USS Cyane sailed into port in 1847 and it continues today. San Diego’s history with the Navy has been intertwined with both growing in size and importance since the mid-19th century. World War I brought more visibility to San Diego and with the attack on Pearl Harbor, San Diego took on a new level of importance in world events. The department of the Navy—which includes the Marine Corps—has consolidated their presence here and today San Diego hosts the largest concentration of fleet forces in the free world.
The Navy is a large and engaged partner in all aspects of San Diego and area residents and businesses benefit from the Navy involvement here. The commissioning of the city namesake ship, USS San Diego LPD-22, will be a public event and all San Diegans will be provided the opportunity to board LPD-22, talk with the crew, tour the ship, and see and hear about her.
USS San Diego LPD-22 recently arrived in San Diego and is the first of our city namesake ships to be home ported here, making a huge change to the skyline. She will be a visible reminder of her place in our port, in our city and as a stalwart for national security.
The San Diego chapter of the Navy League has established a commissioning committee for this event and the Chamber of Commerce is a serving member. These ceremonies are not paid for by the US Government but are supported by private donations. This is the opportunity for companies and individuals to contribute to the commissioning events, receptions, and to present a gift to the ship’s new crew, commemorating the beginning of their service on USS SAN DIEGO.
San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce members who are interested in supporting this important community event can contribute to USS SAN DIEGO LPD-22 by going to www.sdchamber.org or www.lpd22.com for details. Contributions of any amount are welcome and there are established sponsorship levels with corresponding benefits for donors at each level described in the Navy League website.
