The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors Votes to Endorse School Board Candidates FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, CONTACT: Beth Binger, Communications Feb 11, 2000 Tel: (858) 259-3225 Fax: (858) 259-329 San Diego, Feb. 11, 2000 - The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors votes to endorse three nominees running for seats on the San Diego City Schools Board of Education. The Chamber's education committee, composed of 15 members, interviewed several School Board candidates before a recommendation was submitted to the Chamber Board. The following candidates earned the Chamber's support; incumbents Ed Lopez and Ron Ottinger from District E and District D, respectively, and first time candidate, Julie P. Dubick, running in District A. With numerous educational facilities and more than 140,000 students enrolled in San Diego City Schools, the Chamber's Board saw this as an opportunity to continue working towards its stated goal of preparing today's youth and future generations for jobs in San Diego's highly technical market "As various organizations throughout the region continue to recruit high-tech and bio-tech companies to San Diego, it is in our best interests to assist in developing an educated workforce to support these businesses," states Jessie J. Knight Jr., Chamber President and CEO. "Educated employees are in demand as Southern California's technology center continues to expand," continued Knight. Ed Lopez, current President of San Diego Unified School Board, was born, raised and educated in District E, which includes parts of both east and south San Diego, Emerald Hills, Paradise Hills, and Oak Park. Lopez has an extensive history of involvement in both education and community affairs. A graduate of UCSD and UC Boalt Hall Berkeley School of Law, Lopez places a great deal of attention on issues affecting student performance and experience. Ed Lopez has volunteered his time and efforts to assist the Centre City Development Corporation, Urban Redevelopment Council and the Chicano Federation and also maintains ties to his alma mater as an active member of the UCSD Alumni Association Board of Directors. As a former staff member of the San Diego City Schools, Ottinger has facilitated many reform initiatives including the 1987 Schools of the Future Commission. Mr. Ottinger represents the communities of Hillcrest, Golden Hills, Normal Heights and North Park and was elected to the School Board in 1992 and reelected to a second four-year term in 1996. A graduate of Amherst College in Massachusetts, Ottinger served as board president in 1995, 1997, and 1998. Ottinger is Chairman of the Board of the AVID Center, which offers a nationally recognized program that prepares economically disadvantaged students to attend college, and is actively involved with the Parent Institute for Quality Education and the San Diego Workforce Partnership. A former board member of Scripps Memorial Hospital Foundation and the San Diego Bar Association Committee, Julie P. Dubick is running to represent the communities of Clairemont, La Jolla, Pacific Beach and University City. Dubick received her law degree with honors from Case Western Reserve School of Law and is a senior partner of Seltzer Caplan Wilkins & McMahon, specializing in business litigation, employment litigation and commercial law disputes. A mother of three and a P.T.A. volunteer, Dubick, for several years has a keen interest in education. As a teacher for the Continuing Education of the Bar, Dubick shares her knowledge of law with others. |
