Performing Arts

San Diego is well known for its sun, surf and sand, but when the sun goes down, the curtain goes up on stages all over the county. From the performing arts center in Escondido to historic theaters built at the turn of the century, from ballet to traditional folk dance, from symphony performances to dramatic opera, San Diego offers the best in quality performing arts, all year round.

Plentiful Theater Nightlife

Perhaps the visible members of the community theater scene include the famed Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park and the La Jolla Playhouse. The San Diego Repertory Theatre, affectionately known as "the Rep," presents productions at the Lyceum Theatre in Horton Plaza, while smaller theater groups like Sledgehammer and Blackfriars ensembles provide quirkier, more experimental fare.

The La Jolla Playhouse, founded in 1947 by actors Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire and Mel Ferrer as a summer stock theater, has expanded over the years and, in 1993, received a Tony Award for "Outstanding American Regional Theater."

Music fans will appreciate the Starlight Musical Theatre. Founded in 1946, it was the first company of its kind in California, and its outdoor programs, presented in Balboa park's Starlight Bowl, are a much beloved summer tradition.

World Famous San Diego Opera

Each season the San Diego Opera present five productions in the Civic Theatre in downtown, San Diego, from January through May with prominent artists such as Richard Leech, Jerry Hadley, Ren?e Fleming, Ferruccio Furlanetto, James Morris and Jane Eaglen. In a commitment to the vocal arts, San Diego Opera also offers a Recital Series, which has included sold-out concerts and recitals by Luciano Pavarotti, JoséCarreras, Placido Domingo, Marilyn Horne, Kiri Te Kanawa, Cecilia Bartoli, Thomas Hampson and Renata Scotto.

Performing Arts Venues

Performing arts centers of all shapes and sizes dots the metro area, including several state-of-the-art facilities built within the past several years.

The California Center for the Arts, Escondido is a 200,000-square-foot complex that includes a 1,500-seat convert hall, a 400-seat theater, a museum and conference center. The $74.4 million center features everything from The Will Rogers Follies to chanting Tibetan monks.

The Poway Center for the Performing Arts, which opened in May of 1990, is an 800-seat, state-of-the-art theater facility designed for plays and concerts. Since 1992, the center has been the San Diego home of the Pasadena Playhouse, the state theater of California.

The 1,200-seat East County Performing Arts Center rounds out the choice of performing arts centers. The Civic Theatre is the largest theater in San Diego, and regularly features performances of opera, plays and more, while the historic, Baroque-style Spreckels Theater has been in continuous operation since 1912.

Performing Arts League

At the heart of all these venues and organizations is the San Diego Performing Arts League, an umbrella organization for more than 100 performing arts groups in San Diego County. The League publishes a bimonthly performing arts guide available at theaters, coffee houses and retail stores, or by subscription for $10 per year. The League also operates the TIMES ARTS TIX half-price ticket booth at Horton Plaza a great way to enjoy more live performances for less money.
